PLAYING PLAID

Nowhere beats the heart so kindly as beneath the tartan plaid…

William Edmonstoune Aytou

Hey guys, how are you all? Are you ready to celebrate Christmas !! Tree decoration, gift wrapping, socks stuffings….all set for Christmas Eve. Same here, but still I want to write a post in between the ongoing celebrations as the topic is one of my favourites. As we know that patterns play an important part in fashion. Like colours, we have distinctive patterns which are there to create amazing looks for fashion runways and hit along any given fashion platform. Out of all those beautiful and creative patterns; today I am going to talk about one such pattern. PLAID. This one such winter favourite is also known as Tartan. This consists of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours.

Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. It is often called Plaid in the United States. It is made of alternating bands of coloured (pre-dyed) threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other.

The tartan as we know it today is not thought to have existed in Scotland before the sixteenth century. By the late 16th century there are numerous references to striped or checkered plaids. It is not until the late 17th or early 18th century that any kind of uniformity in tartan is thought to have occurred. Tartan originated in woven wool, but now they are made from many other materials.

Scottish immigration at the end of the 18th century contributed to the popularisation of plaid in the USA. Founded in 1830 by Woolrich Woollen Mills, this legendary pattern comes from Pennsylvania. In the field of fashion, these lumberjack checks play a significant role and already created their outstanding mark. The plaid pattern is one of the most classic and chic of all times.

Designers all over the world keep on creating and experimenting with this pattern in different ways like coloured tartans or plaids which was a major trend last year and this year too. This pattern is so effortless that you can wear any piece of garment with checks and you will never fail to nail the look, be it a simple buffalo shirt or be it a chic skirt along with a shimmering top.

Wool-blend plaid skirt is so classic and a kind of wardrobe must-have. Plaid shirts on the other hand are unisex and effortless. Designers used this pattern in accessories like gloves, shoes, Winter hats and bags.

The best you can do is combine tan accessories with your plaid pieces as they complement each other flawlessly. As a stylist, I would like to recommend all fashionistas to at least have one plaid piece in their wardrobe in any form.

Complete your look with these lumberjack checks available in all moody hues these days. A little rough and tumble never hurt anyone. All the best with the Plaid Playing guys!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
